Hurricanes Ready To Trade Teuvo Teräväinen?

It sure sounds like it’s going to be a fascinating offseason in Carolina. The Canes were just swept by the 8 seed Florida Panthers and it sounds like it may be a real challenge to bring the same team back for next year. Could Teuvo Teräväinen become the odd man out? It sure sounds like that’s a possibility.

Jordan Staal is a guy we already talked about if Carolina could find the cap space necessary to bring back their captain. Starting goalie Freddie Anderson is a pending free agent too. Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas, Pesce, Brady Skjei, and Teräväinen will all need new contracts. Brent Burns and Jaccob Slavin the year after that. Someone may have to go in order to make all the pieces work.

Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer examines potential trade candidates and he lists Teräväinen as a prime target that could be on the way out.

“The Hurricanes may also decide this offseason is the time to move Teravainen if they think they’re unlikely to re-sign him, or the time to sell high on Necas or Jack Drury, who struggled mightily in the playoffs.”

Teräväinen, 28, notched 37 points in 68 games this past year. The former Blackhawks first round pick in 2012 was more prolific a year ago posting 65 points in 77 games. With Teräväinen currently carrying an AAV of $5.4 million, dumping that money would be an easy way to clear necessary space. It may all depend on what Teräväinen is looking for in his next deal. Of course, Martin Necas is a restricted next offseason so he is also a name that can’t be counted on to be dealt instead.

Regardless, it seems unlikely the Canes run the same group back for 2023-24.
