The Celtics are flat out screwed. There is no other way to say it. A few days ago, I wrote an article about how Danny Ainge needs to stop pursuing Anthony Davis. It had become very obvious that Davis did not want to play in Boston. Now we have more bad news.
The Boston Globe‘s Adam Himmelsbach is reporting that Irving has essentially ‘ghosted’ the Celtics. Yikes:
“The strangest part of the Irving situation right now is that it appears he has essentially ghosted on the Celtics,” Himmelsbach reported. “The people within the organization I have spoken with have made it clear that they have had
little, if any, communication with Irving in recent weeks.”
I’m now going to give the same advice I gave to Ainge that I gave to him a few days ago. Take it away,
It breaks my heart. It really does. I love Kyrie. Unfortunately, he has died. He is dead to me (unless he actually does return to the Celtics which looks unlikely at this point). This is the only thing that Boston can do. Act like he died. Operate like the man is never coming back. It’s time to start thinking about back up plans.
The Nets appear to be the front runners for Irving. Maybe that means D’Angelo Russell is available (probably should be if Irving signs). Hell, sign me up for Seth Curry. I’d love to see what he looks like getting starter minutes. Al Horford can go rot too. I don’t need to see him back. It’s time to start planning for alternatives. One guy I’d love to have is Brad Beal. Regardless, go find a priest, Irving has died. He sleeps with the fishes now.
