Stephen Jones: Dak Prescott’s Next Contract Must Be ‘Team Friendly’

Will the Dallas Cowboys pay Dak Prescott? That’s a question that is looming heavy over the franchise. Dak is in the final year of his rookie contract and it’s time to either extend him or move on. Dallas really only has one more year to decide unless they want to franchise him for big money. Stephen Jones provided a little more clarity on Dak’s contract status.

Is Dak going to get big money? That doesn’t appear to be the case. Jones said Dak’s next contract must be “team friendly,” via the Dallas Morning News.

There’s two sides to this,” Jones said. “We’ve really never just gotten into the weeds in terms with Dak himself in terms of what his preference is. I know he’s focused on winning and really getting as many players as he can out there working so we can have a great team next year. . . . At the same time I’m sure it’ll be coming. There will be a point in time where we all get around and say, ‘Hey, let’s get this done by a certain time and put it behind us.’”

We may have a standoff coming. It wasn’t long ago that Prescott made a strange comment about Tom Brady’s wife. These comments make it seem like Dak will not take a hometown discount.

“Nobody’s wife makes as much money as his wife does either,” Prescott said at the time. “When Tom Brady isn’t the breadwinner in the home, then that’s a great problem to have. So, in that case, he can do that. He can do his contract however you want to do it.”

This is a bad look for Dak. Don’t talk about another person’s woman. That’s just not a good idea. Tom Brady takes pay cuts because he wants to win. Not because his wife makes a lot of money. Brady has enough money to do whatever he wants with or without Gisele.

I’m on the Cowboys side. There is nothing Dak has done in 3 years to show you that he can win a Super Bowl. At best, he’s maybe the 15th best quarterback in the league. That’s probably being generous too. In three years, Dak is averaging 22 touchdowns and 8 picks per year. Dallas can draft another quarterback who can duplicate those numbers. Either take $15 million per year or go take a hike. Don’t make the Blake Bortles mistake, Dallas.
