Indianapolis Colts 2019 NFL Draft War Room

2019 NFL Draft

2019 NFL Draft
Quenton Nelson turned out to be the best player in the entire 2019 NFL Draft. Let’s go inside the Indianapolis Colts war room to see if they can hit back to back home runs in the draft (Clark Wade/IndyStar)

For the first time maybe ever, the Colts have something cooking. Having Peyton Manning and a bunch of spare parts doesn’t count. I’m talking about a real roster. It’s not there yet but one or two more strong drafts and Indy is a legit Super Bowl contender. They also have some extra draft capital thanks to the trade down last year with the Jets…. AND it landed them Quenton Nelson too! Let’s head into the war room. What can we expect from the Indianapolis Colts during the 2019 NFL Draft?

First Round (Pick 26) – I think Indy could go back to the Notre Dame well here. Jerry Tillery makes a lot of sense. The Colts need more beef on the defensive line and Tillery gives them that. He can really attack the quarterback with those long arms. I think this is just going to be prime real estate for defensive line prospects. There’s 800 of them. Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, etc. Throw a dart at one and you’re probably going to get a good one.

Second Round (Pick 34) – I think this pick gives you some risk – reward. The Colts basically got this one for free so why not gamble with it? Greedy Williams may be available with this pick. I’m not sure if he fits the Colts heavy zone defense but I think you have to go big game hunting here. Get another star. Just like they did with Darius Leonard. Maybe a Jachai Polite? Maybe a Zach Allen? Maybe even trade down and turn it into a 2020 first rounder? Get creative.

Second Round (Pick 59) – Back end of round two is prime wide receiver territory. This is where you find the gems. Right now there are a bunch of them and it’s hard to get a good gauge on who is going to drop. All I know is that T.Y. Hilton needs a sidekick. Devin Funchess ain’t it. I’m not sure who Chris Ballard will go for. Maybe it’s a N’Keal Harry. Maybe it’s a J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. I love Deebo Samuel personally. It’s tough to know who is going to be on the board but receiver should be a position the Colts attack at some point.

Third Round (Pick 90) – I Love the idea of adding a corner here. The current group they have is nothing to write home about. How about a slot guy to pair with Pierre Desir like David Long of Michigan. David Long rocks. He had an awesome combine and showed super quick feet. I’m in on the guy. Regardless, corner should be another place the Colts address.

Indy isn’t too far away. One more runner to pair with Marlon Mack. Another linebacker. You have to trust Chris Ballard knows what he’s doing after last year’s draft.
