The NFL offseason is rapidly approaching and so is the NFL Draft. One team that doesn’t own a first round pick this year is the Dallas Cowboys who will have to find other ways to improve the roster. If you recall, Dallas forked over its first round pick for wide receiver Amari Cooper. Do the Cowboys regret giving up a high draft pick for the services of Cooper? Well, let’s ask Stephen Jones.
Jerry Jones’ son, Stephen, mocked the Raiders for the Cooper deal:
“When the Raiders [use] our pick, we’ll be watching Amari Cooper highlight tapes,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Tuesday, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.
First, I’ll say I was totally wrong on the Cooper deal. Dallas won that deal by a mile. An outcome I did not see coming. Cooper changed the entire forecast of the Cowboys season. In 9 games with Cooper, Dallas went 7-2. He also reeled in 53 receptions for 725 yards and six touchdowns. I would say that was worth the 27th pick in the draft considering that Cooper is just 24 years of age and somehow younger than Calvin Ridley.
Second, I’ll say that those sorts of comments are just unnecessary. The Patriots would never say something like that. They would say something like “I thought the deal was great for both sides”. That’s the response you need regardless of how the deal turns out. It’s just bad business. Now the Raiders won’t trust them in potential deals in the future.
Dallas does have some holes to fill this offseason. They need another receiver with Cole Beasley hitting the open market. They also need a safety and defensive line help too. David Irving and Randy Gregory both were suspended.
