Report: The Yankees May Try To Trade Giancarlo Staton

Giancarlo Stanton

Will Giancarlo Stanton stick on the Yankees roster long term?(Kim Klement/USA Today Sports)

No man is safe on the Yankees roster. Anytime the Red Sox win the World Series, everyone is feeling the heat. New York seems to be in on every free agent. One tasty rumor out there would send prolific slugger, Giancarlo Stanton, out of town in order to replace him with another high profile free agent such as Manny Machado and or Bryce Harper.

The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo reported that the Yankees might consider this move:

“There are also long-shot rumblings about the Yankees trying to move Giancarlo Stanton,” Cafardo wrote. “Obviously it’s a massive contract, but if the Dodgers ever felt they needed to do something splashy, Stanton isn’t that far-fetched, since that’s one team to which he would likely approve a trade.

“Nor would it be far-fetched if the Giants wanted a big hitter to give their staggering offense a jump start, or if the Phillies decided to include Stanton on their list of superstars to acquire. Stanton has about $260 million remaining on his contract over the next 10 years. That would be cheaper than acquiring Machado or Bryce Harper.”

The reason for this obviously stems from Giancarlo’s choke job in the postseason. In the division series against the Red Sox, Stanton went 4-18. Zero doubles, zero home runs, and zero walks. He did strike out six times including one in the 9th inning in the clincher for Boston. If the team feels like he can’t handle the bright lights, then maybe it wouldn’t be so crazy to deal him. Stanton is likely safe unless the Yankees opt to sign Bryce Harper.

That’s Some Cheese – Episode 19 – 4.6.18

Both the Dodgers and Giants may be in play if the Yankees decided to move on. Stanton is from California so it is likely he would waive his no-trade clause. Both NL teams are in need of a power bat. My bet is that Giancarlo Stanton is safe, especially because of the huge contract.
