Bob Huggins in Hot Water Following Insensitive Remarks on Radio Show

West Virginia head men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins is in some trouble after making insensitive remarks on a Cincinnati radio show Monday morning.

While on Bill Cunningham’s WLW radio show, Huggins, the former head coach of Cincinnati, was asked about UC’s rivalry with Xavier. He then twice used a homophobic slur in reference to Xavier fans.

Bob Huggins’ and WVU Athletics’ Statements

Huggins released a statement through the WVU Basketball program. In part, it read as follows:

“During the conversation, I used a completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase that there is simply no excuse for – and I won’t try to make one here. […] There are consequences for our words and actions, and I will fully accept any coming my way. I am ashamed and embarrassed and heartbroken for those I have hurt. I must do better, and I will.”

The West Virginia Athletic Department released a statement of their own:

“Coach Huggins’ remarks today on a Cincinnati radio show were insensitive, offensive and do not represent our university values. Coach Huggins has since apologized. West Virginia University does not condone the use of such language and takes such actions very seriously. The situation is under review and will be addressed by the university and its athletics department.”

As of now, the university has yet to comment or levy any sort of punishment. However, Huggins being fired is certainly not off the table.

It could be a very abrupt end to Huggins’ nearly 40-year head coaching career, one that has seen him reach 26 NCAA Tournaments and two Final Fours.

A Huggins firing would certainly shake things up for West Virginia Basketball. The Mountaineers have a promising transfer class on the way headlined by Jesse Edwards, Kerr Kriisa, and RaeQuan Battle. Some of these players may look to reenter the portal if West Virginia’s head coach is sent packing.
