Embiid: Nets Beg For Calls, Just Like Nick Nurse

The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Brooklyn Nets on Monday to take a commanding 2-0 series lead. After the game, Sixers superstar and likely MVP award winner Joel Embiid took a shot at his opponents. In the process, he sent a stray bullet north to Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse.

“I saw after the game last time, they (Nets) kind of took the Nick Nurse route of begging for free throws and calling out the referees,” Embiid said to the media. “Then they come out and they got a lot of calls, which I guess is good for them.”

A small chuckle was heard from the crowd during his answer. I thought it was pretty funny; I would have received the comments better than the boring Sixers media room.

Still, this brief tangent is surprising coming from Embiid. You would think that he would support the complainers since that’s a big part of his own game. Game respects game, right?

Also, what’s with the shot at Nurse? He could have said anyone else, but he decides to list Nick Nurse, who couldn’t be less relevant in the current situation. Pretty odd from where I’m sitting.

In any event, it’s unsurprising to hear an NBA player complaining about a team begging for calls. This is what the NBA is. No one ever accepts their fate. They have to beg. If a team gets a call on them, it’s the wrong call and the ref has to hear it. If there is no call, it’s blasphemous that no call was made and the official has to hear it. I will even dare to say there is no other sport with as big of a complaining problem as the NBA. Every single player on every team has complained to the refs at one time or another.

I don’t mean to sound like Skip Bayless here, but complaining to the refs is definitely a problem around the league. This is especially prevalent amongst the stars in the league. Embiid, LeBron James and Draymond Green are amongst the biggest squawkers in the league, in my eyes.

Complaining can be good sometimes — especially if the ref gets something badly wrong, then complaining is great. However, it gets extremely worn out sometimes, and you hate to see grown adults complaining about a referee doing their job.
