Cowboys Trading For Stephon Gilmore

The Dallas Cowboys are acquiring former Defensive Player of the Year cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Pelissero reports that the return for the Colts will be a fifth-round compensatory pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Gilmore, 32, has bounced around the league for the past few seasons since winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. Since he won that award with New England, he was with Carolina and Indianapolis, for a season each.

The cornerback signed a two-year deal with the Colts last season, and he’ll make $7.96 million this season. Indianapolis clears $9 million in cap space as part of the deal.

Gilmore, a five-time pro bowler, should slide right into the Cowboys’ cornerback room as their number two. Dallas is pairing Trevon Diggs is getting a viable, proven veteran cornerback.

This is a low-risk-high-reward move for the Cowboys. They certainly did not give up a lot, a conditional fifth-round pick is not exactly a high-caliber pick. They also added a defensive playmaker to an already elite defense. Cornerback number two was probably their biggest weakness on defense heading into this offseason, and they’ve certainly addressed it today.

Expect the fire sale to continue for the Colts. They let Bobby Okereke walk to the Giants. But hey, at least they gave a record-breaking deal to kicker Matt Gay. I expect them to continue to ship off the team that went 4-12-1 and fired their coach mid-season. Also, as everyone expected, they will release quarterback Matt Ryan.

The Cowboys needed to do this. The NFC East grows stronger by the day. The division already holds Terry McLaurin, A.J. Brown, Dallas Goedert, Devonta Smith, and most recently, Darren Waller. For a division that had three playoff teams last season, Dallas improved their odds for a division title pursuit.
