Hall-of-Fame Head Coach Bud Grant has passed away at 95
Legendary Minnesota Vikings head coach Bud Grant passed away this morning at 95-years-old. The Vikings announced this morning on their Twitter.
On their Twitter, the Vikings released a statement on their coach’s passing. “We are absolutely devastated to announce legendary Minnesota Vikings head coach and Hall of Fame Bud Grant has passed away this morning at age 95. We, like all Vikings and NFL fans, are shocked and saddened by this terrible news.” Via Minnesota Vikings Twitter.
The Minnesota Vikings hired Grant as head coach on March 10th, 1967. He would go on to serve 18 seasons as the Vikings’ coach and lead them to a record of 158-96-5 in the regular seasons and 10-12 in the postseason. Of those 12 losses in the postseason, four of them came in the Super Bowl. The Vikings would win the final NFL championship before the merging of the AFL and NFL. They would go on to lose to the Chiefs in Super Bowl IV.
Grant played more than football in his days. The Philadelphia Eagles selected Bud Grant with the 14th overall pick in the 1950 NFL draft. The Minneapolis Lakers also selected Grant in the 1950 NBA draft with the 47th overall pick. Grant also played baseball in his earlier days in high school at Superior High School in Wisconsin.
After his NFL tenure, Grant joined the Canadian Football league for four seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He would go on to coach the Blue Bombers to win four Grey Cups and CFL coach of the year in 1965. Grant won his Grey Cups in 1958, 1959, 1961, and 1962. As his career with the CFL concluded, Grant would ultimately join the Vikings and cement his legacy as one of the best football coaches of all time. Rest in Peace Bud Grant.
