Nick Saban disregards Bryce Young’s size concerns

Alabama head coach Nick Saban disregards Bryce Young’s size concerns

Ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young has been receiving size concerns after being measured at 5-foot-10 and weighing in at 204 pounds at the NFL Combine. But his college head coach Nick Saban has disregarded those size concerns and taken a shot at another quarterback in this year’s draft class, per Pro Football Talk.

Young has been the talk of the combine and NFL Draft ever since he stepped foot out of Alabama. But one thing has made the Young lovers question the quarterbacks NFL capability, and that’s his size.

As said before, Young is under six feet tall and weighs around 200 pounds. That’s not big for an NFL quarterback. He’s slowly creeping into that Kyler Murray size talk. But Saban thinks this is all being blown out of proportion.

“We’ve all seen the 6-4, 225-pound guy that can throw it like a bazooka, but he can’t make the choices and decisions; he can’t distribute the ball; he can’t throw it accurately,” Nick Saban said on Stephen A. Smith’s Know Mercy podcast, via Mike Rodak of al.com and PFT. “So who’s the better bet? I’m going on history, production, performance, and Bryce Young’s done it about as well as anybody.”

That 6-foot-4 quarterback that Saban is talking about is none other than Florida Gator Anthony Richardson. Richardson has been flying up betting markets to be the first overall pick because of his athletic ability and size. But Saban thinks it’s better to go by the book and who has actually performed better in their career.

“I think history is the best indicator of what the future is going to bring,” Saban said, via PFT. “Bryce is not ideal height that NFL folks would like to see for that particular position, quarterback. But I think Bryce has played extremely well. He has no history of being injury-prone.

At Alabama, Young had 87 total touchdowns, 80 passing and seven rushing, and 8,356 passing yards. Under Saban’s tutelage, Young collected a slew of awards, including the 2021 Heisman Trophy, as a starter for the Crimson Tide and was also part of Alabama’s national championship team in 2020.

Young will be able to show off his tangibles at Alabama’s Pro day on March 23 for NFL scouts after he declined to throw at the NFL Combine.
