Richardson sees himself as a blend of Lamar Jackson and Cam Newton
The NFL draft is almost here, and with that comes pro comparisons for college athletes. Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson has flown up the Vegas betting odds for first overall because of his raw talent shown in Gainesville. In doing so, Richardson sees himself as a blend of two former MVPs: Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson, according to PFT.
At Florida, Richardson was a dual threat quarterback, which is why he is such an interesting prospect. In his 2022 campaign, Richardson threw for almost 2,600 yards and ran for almost 700 yards on top of that. He also added on 26 total touchdowns for the Gators, with nine rushing and 17 passing. He also showed off his arm talent at Florida, notably throwing a 78-yard pass Xzavier Henderson in a loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.
Richardson shows off traits like former MVP quarterbacks Newton and Jackson as we know both quarterbacks for their running ability. In his 2015 MVP season, Newton threw for 35 passing touchdowns and ran for 10. On top of that, he had a total of almost 4,500 yards. In Jackson’s MVP season, he had 43 total touchdowns. 36 passing and 7 rushing. He also added 3,127 passing and 1,206 rushing yards.
“I started calling myself Cam Jackson in 11th grade. Just trying to make big plays, just like Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson,” Richardson said, via PFT.
Anthony Richardson has drawn many comparisons to the pair of dual threat quarterbacks this year, but another comparison that should entice analysts the most is Josh Allen.
Richardson and Allen have the same raw talent and rushing ability in their game, but the latter stands out. At that size, with the speed and agility, is special. These traits, along with Richardson’s combine workout, will move him up draft boards higher and higher.
