Los Angeles Chargers GM Tom Telesco never had a thought of firing HC Brandon Staley

Chargers general manager Tom Telesco never considered firing Brandon Staley, according to theScore.

“The front office’s belief in Brandon hasn’t changed,” Telesco said regarding the possibility of letting Staley go. “He’s got our belief, our players believe in him. He’s a tremendous leader, he’s detail-oriented, and he’s a fighter. That’s the type of people that I want to be with me… I understand the season didn’t end quite the way we would’ve liked it, but he’s got our full support.

Rumors have been looming around the Chargers organization after their recent choke in the second half against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC wild-card matchup. The Chargers were up 27-7 at halftime but lost 31-30 on a last-second field goal by Riley Patterson. The Chargers forced five turnovers, four interceptions and one fumble recovery in their loss, though Staley and the team were unable to capitalize on the Jaguars’ mistakes.

“Disappointing end of the season, obviously, losing in the playoffs,” Telesco said of team’s playoff performance. “(We were) 10-7 going into the playoffs, feeling pretty good that we can make a run. To lose in the opening week of the playoffs. Any playoff loss is painful, but losing in the first round is difficult, and the manner in which we lost just stings a little bit more.”

Staley was hired in 2021 after being formally tabbed by the Los Angeles Rams as defensive coordinator in 2020. Staley would go on to win 19 out of his first 35 games as head coach of the Chargers. He has only made one playoff appearance in his time with the organization.

It will be interesting to see how much time Telesco gives Staley until he is removed from the team.
