Logan Paul is one of the biggest influencers on the internet. He and his brother, Jake, burst onto the scene during the days of Vine and have built numerous businesses amassing a nice fortune. However, all the wealth from podcasts, Prime, and boxing wasn’t enough for Paul. Now, he is embroiled in controversy over a potential crypto scam and has declared war on YouTuber Coffeezilla.
2021 was the year of NFTs. No one really knew what they were, but people saw how much money was involved in some projects, like Bored Ape Yacht Club, and soon NFTs and cryptocurrency became common speak. Obviously, an internet celebrity like Paul could create his own project and use his fame to sell. Thus, the creation of CryptoZoo.
The basics of CryptoZoo are that buyers, called ZooKeepers, buy, sell, and collect eggs that hatch into animals. These animals can then be crossbred with others in your collection to create hybrids, which can then be sold for the native currency and converted into real money. It’s considered as a “play to earn” game, and in theory should earn holders passive income over time or a profit once they sell their NFT.
Fast forward to the end of 2022, and still no game. Backers were understandably getting upset that they spent thousands of dollars buying into this system and had nothing to show for it. This is where Coffeezilla enters the picture. On his YouTube channel, Coffeezilla posted a three-part series claiming that Paul was scamming people.
In his videos, Coffeezilla talked to those involved in the project. People who bought into CryptoZoo stated that they can’t access their eggs or earn any type of money. A developer, according to Paul in one of Coffeezilla’s videos, stole the code for the game and fled to Switzerland, and held the code ransom for $1 million. Coffeezilla talked to this developer, and the developer said that he was never paid for his work.
After numerous teases, Paul finally made a response. He refuted all the claims and stated that CryptoZoo was overtaken by criminals that he unknowingly hired. Paul continued to attack Coffeezilla, primarily on what Paul said was an illegal recording of a conversation between Coffeezilla and Paul’s manager. He, multiple times, threatened Coffeezilla with legal action and concluded the video with an invitation to Coffeezilla to hop on a podcast. The entire video is just over seven minutes long.
The resulting video has brought on some reactions from both parties on Twitter.
Reading the comments of Paul’s tweet announcing his response as well as the YouTube comments, I would say most people do not buy what Paul is selling here. The best-case scenario, where this is not a scam, is still bad. If this is not a scam, then Paul still hired a bunch of scammers to run a massive crypto project. Either Paul did not properly check who he hired, or he willingly hired criminals and scammers.
Personally, I don’t think there is a good outcome for Paul. The personal attacks on Coffeezilla, even if Coffeezilla has wrong information, feel like a scare tactic to make him back down. Plus, there are still so many unanswered questions. What happens to the people that already lost tons of money? Why stay silent with all this trouble? Why not update your community?
