Bart Scott Stupidly Blames Tee Higgins for Damar Hamlin Incident

I’m sure all of you have either seen or heard about the Damar Hamlin situation at this point. And I’m also sure that, like me, you are continuing to wish for a quick recovery. It’s a situation that has brought the entire NFL community together as everyone patiently awaits to hear good news.

But while most of the NFL world spent last night and today focusing on the health of Hamlin, ESPN analyst Bart Scott seemed keener on blaming Tee Higgins.

Now, Scott tries to preface this by saying he’s not trying to blame Higgins and is rather trying to break down what happened. And although I believe Scott, the optics of it all still just don’t look great.

There really isn’t anyone to blame in a situation like this. It was a freak accident on what looked like a routine play. Hamlin has made thousands of tackles like that over the course of his football career and last night he just got very unlucky.

I’m sure Higgins still feels extremely guilty about the whole thing and having guys like Scott say stuff of this nature doesn’t help at all. We’ve all seen the play by now — Higgins didn’t do anything wrong or dirty. He was simply doing what every NFL player does: fighting for yards.

Now, again, I know Scott isn’t trying to say Higgins is some monster who ended Hamlin’s career, but it just wasn’t the time or place to make a comment like that. Pointing fingers in a situation like this doesn’t really do any good, simply because there is no one person to be blamed.

What happened to Damar Hamlin was once again just a freak accident — one that I’m hoping we don’t ever see again in the NFL. No one is to blame, especially Tee Higgins, and it would do everyone better if during times like these we could just stay unified instead of trying to point fingers. Think you can do that, Bart Scott?
