49ers to stick with Brock Purdy Amidst Garoppolo Injury

Misfortune has struck again for the San Francisco 49ers as Jimmy Garoppolo will miss the remainder of his season with a broken foot. Garoppolo’s absence now forces the 49ers to rely on third-string quarterback Brock Purdy out of Iowa State.

Garoppolo’s injury occurred on San Francisco’s first possession against the Dolphins and a closer look at the hit revealed the potential severity of the injury.

As a result, the 49ers were forced to rely on rookie quarterback and Mr. Irrelevant himself, Purdy. To the surprise of many, he played well. Purdy finished the game with 25 completions on 37 attempts with 210 yards and two touchdowns, while also leading them to a dominant victory over the Dolphins.

Purdy’s play was so impressive that the 49ers have announced him as the starter for their next game against the Bucs. His play against the Dolphins definitely gives Niner fans something to be excited about. With how dynamic this offense is under Kyle Shanahan, not much is needed from him aside from not turning the ball over.

Shanahan shared his excitement to work with Purdy.

“Brock naturally looks a lot more often for the deeper one than the shorter one, which is awesome,” Shanahan said.

Aiding Purdy’s efforts is San Francisco’s top-ranked defense. The 49ers defense, which includes the likes of Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, and the underrated Talanoa Hufanga, is dominant enough to win games by itself. The offensive weapons, notably Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle, should make Purdy’s job a lot easier, too.

The injury to Garoppolo is obviously crushing news for all Niner fans. But the thing is, this team has been built to function without a top-tier signal caller. The defense is elite enough to keep them in virtually any game, and their offensive weapons will allow Purdy to adopt the role of a game manager.

While this injury may derail the chances of a Super Bowl run, you would be foolish to simply believe that this team is gonna roll over and die. The 49ers are still gonna be a very big problem come late December.
