Spencer Dinwiddie claims Tony Brothers used profane language towards him after tech

In the second quarter of Friday night’s game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Toronto Raptors, Mavericks guard Spencer Dinwiddie was whistled for a technical foul from longtime NBA referee Tony Brothers. While Dinwiddie argued the call, he said after the game that Brothers called Dinwiddie a not-very-nice name to one of his Dallas teammates (was not specified).

It’s safe to say that the 29-year-old guard was not pleased with Brothers, putting him on blast after the game:

“I apologize to Tony Brothers for what seemed to keep him irate, which was a clap. He thought it was disrespectful,” Dinwiddie said. “I would like to say I’m sorry first and foremost. And secondarily I would like to say, not only would I like my [fine] money back, but I would like to not be called a “b**** a** motherf***** to my teammates.

“I understand it’s the heat of the moment, I’ve definitely said swear words,” he added. “But like if I was playing against somebody on the other team and they said that to my teammate, I would be like listen, ‘Hey, I’m right here.’ But because obviously they [referees are in] positions of authority and whatnot, you can’t necessarily ask for that address, so I’m just taking my fair stance and saying, ‘Hey, look, if you feel that way, fine by me, just say it to my face, like any other grown man.’ That’s all I want. I’m not even mad at the language, everybody has said things before when they are upset or feeling sensitive or hurt. That’s fine. Just say it to my face.”

Full quotes here.
Dinwiddie was (rightfully) unhappy with Brothers after the game.

Here is the complete incident:

You can’t tell what Dinwiddie said to warrant the technical, but Tony Brothers pretty quick to give him one after he said something. You can’t help but wonder: Did Brothers murmur those words to Reggie Bullock or Dorian Finney-Smith, who were both close in proximity to Brothers after the play?

Brothers was not made available for comments postgame, nor has he make a public comment amid the allegation. He is also not scheduled for any of the eight Saturday games.

Head coach Jason Kidd said he would talk to Dinwiddie to further evaluate the situation.

“That’s tough. I have to talk to Spencer,” Kidd said after the game. “When you look at Tony and what he’s done in this league, he’s well-liked and also one of the best that we have. We’re going to see what happened here and talk to Spencer and find out exactly what happened. That’s a sensitive topic. We’ll see what happens.”

Dinwiddie was not ejected from the game. He finished the game with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range. He added seven assists and two steals in Dallas’ 111-110 home win, which moved them to 5-3 on the season. The guard is averaging 17.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.4 steals through eight games on 48.2/42.3/71.4 shooting.

On top of the fine for receiving the technical, who knows if Dinwiddie will get fined for his postgame comments? And who knows what the punishment will look like for Brothers — if anything.

Either way, it feels like the NBA should address this sooner rather than later.
