Blake Griffin and Celtics Agree to 1-Year Deal

Blake Griffin and the Boston Celtics have agreed to a 1-year deal, as first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. It is a fully guaranteed deal in which Griffin will earn around 2.9 million, the league’s veteran minimum.

Griffin, entering his 13th season in the NBA, has averaged 19.8 points per game over his career. Griffin will add depth to a Celtics team that is already filled with talent. Griffin is a six-time All-Star who is poised to help the Celtics’ frontcourt at the start of the year.

Griffin has spent the past two seasons with Brooklyn where he averaged 10 and 6.4 points per game, respectively. Griffin has seen a steady decline in production over the years following his All-Star campaign in 2018 with the Detroit Pistons. Last season was the first time in his career he averaged less than 10 points per game. His decline in production has been attributed to his increase in injuries over the past few years.

Griffin has been criticized over the past few seasons for his lack of solid play on the court. Many have criticized teams that have signed him, arguing he brings no real upgrade to the roster.

In terms of Griffin and the Celtics, he may have a real opportunity to see meaningful minutes this season. Boston’s frontcourt has found itself riddled with injuries prior to the season beginning, including the loss of Danilo Gallinari for the entirety of the season with a torn ACL. This is not to mention center Robert Williams is scheduled to be out until at least November following surgery.

While the Celtics obviously will not get Griffin at his All-Star caliber level, they will look to him to produce with the minutes he is given. It is fairly safe to say that we will not see Blake Griffin perform at the level he once did with the Clippers or Pistons. However, Griffin will only benefit a Celtics team that is chasing a championship following a loss in last season’s NBA finals. It will be interesting to see how Griffin performs with the Celtics, and if taking a risk on the veteran pans out.
