New Orleans Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport was forced to have about half of his pinkie fighter amputated during the offseason. The amputation happened after a plate in his finger broke and caused an infection.
According to ESPN, Davenport’s pinkie injury stems from an injury that happened in college. During a bowl game in his junior year at the University of Texas-San Antonio. Over time, Davenport’s finger began to bend. Eventually, the finger became bent to the point where Davenport had it surgically repaired in 2021. However, the plate that was inserted broke, and Davenport was forced to undergo three more surgeries. Ultimately, Davenport was forced to have the finger amputated, but it does not appear that Davenport’s play will be affected.
This is not the only injury that Davenport has had to deal with this offseason — he also had shoulder surgery.
Injuries are nothing new for Davenport. During his four-year career, he has yet to play more than 13 games in a season. Last season, Davenport was only able to play in eleven games.
When Davenport was on the field last season he played well. In his eleven games, he recorded nine sacks while forcing three fumbles and recording 39 total tackles. In his previous three seasons, Davenport had 12 sacks with 74 total tackles.
The Saints selected Davenport in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. While he has never become an All-Pro talent, he has shown to be a quality starter with high potential.
The Saints elected to pick up Davenport’s fifth-year option which will pay him $9.5 million this upcoming season. After this season, he will be a free agent unless he signs an extension before next offseason.
