Toronto Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins has announced that starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu will miss the remainder of the 2022 season as he undergoes elbow surgery. At this point, the Blue Jays are unsure if Ryu will be forced to have Tommy John or a partial revision but he will miss the entire 2022 season either way.
Ryu was pulled after the fourth inning of his most recent start on May, 31. The next day, Ryu got an MRI to assess the injury.
Ryu has had injury problems for a large portion of the 2022 season. He has already spent time on the injured list back in April and May with forearm inflammation.
As a whole, Ryu has not had a great 2022 season. He currently has a 5.67 ERA over six starts that totaled up to 27 innings. However, he seemed to turn the corner after he returned from his first IL stint. Since May 14, Ryu had a 1.72 ERA in three starts.
Losing a lefty arm in June is never good but the Blue Jays are in a good position to overcome the loss of Ryu. Alek Manoah leads the rotation with a 1.67 ERA. The Blue Jays also made a risky signing this offseason when they added Kevin Gausman but it has paid off as he sits with a 2.67 ERA over 70.2 innings. Jose Berrios and Yusei Kikuchi have both important rotation pieces.
Ross Stripling will take Ryu’s spot in the rotation. This is expected as he pitched in the rotation while Ryu was on the IL. While splitting time between the rotation and bullpen Stripling has pitched well as he sits at a 3.14 ERA.
