While the 2022 NFL Draft might not have top-level high round quality at LB, that is not to say this is a bad draft class at the position. There is a lot of depth and one first-round name really floating around: Devin Lloyd from Utah. Trying to project where the first LB will come off the board has proven to be difficult at times, but the numbers and the tape are there to show why Lloyd should get consideration for a mid-to-late first-round pick. Here is our 2022 NFL Draft Profile of Devin Lloyd.
To say that Lloyd had a rough combine would be pretty accurate. Our Linebacker notes from the combine, it goes more into detail. He ran ok, running a 4.66 40-yard dash but not nearly as well as some of the other prospects in the class.
The on-the-field stuff from his time at Utah is a lot better than what he showed at the Combine. A 2-time Butkus Award finalist as the nation’s top LB. His 22 TFL were tied for second in the nation. Lloyd was very productive and very physical, and he hopes to use that argument to land him near the top of the class. He can play multiple LB positions and do it well. Great tackler, especially in space. I think he has upside as a pass rusher as well with how fluid he was at Utah with using his upper half.
Some concerns I have are while his upper body looks good, the lower body just looks stiff. I think Lloyd will struggle against zone schemes, the tape showed this especially in his game against BYU this season. His coverage skills are marginal, his feet just look slow and at times it doesn’t feel like there is a sense of urgency there.
Devin Lloyd will be a good NFL starter, one day. He is a good prospect with a lot of nice tools and just needs some fine tweaking. I think the team that he goes to will have a lot to say in whether he will find success early on, or if he will look average. I believe he is a first-round pick, but probably post-20. But don’t get me wrong, if he goes in the top-20 I will understand it.
Best fits: Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns
