I HATE People That Don’t Understand Time Zones
We are living in a virtual world. COVID has changed the way we do a lot of things. Fortunately, it really hasn’t affected us too much given the fact that we are an internet company. We will be doing more in-person things when the company moves to Vegas, but that’s a story for another day. The topic today is time zones and it’s infuriating to know how many people don’t understand them.
As the founder and CEO of this company, I interview a lot of people. I actually somewhat enjoy it even though most of the time it’s the same old cheese thrown my way.
“I’m passionate about sports”
“I’ve always had a dream to work in the sports field”
Shut up, muppet. Nobody cares. You know what would actually help your case of being hired in this field? Learn your damn time zones.
I ask every potential intern what time they would like to interview. A healthy 95 percent NEVER list the time zone they’re in. If you ask me, this is a bigger problem than COVID itself.
I can’t fathom how it keeps happening. I have people not show up to interviews. I have them then email back asking why the zoom link expired or doesn’t work. On the rare occasion, the person acknowledges they screwed up because I don’t live next to them.
Do they not teach time zones in school? Listen, I know the school system is broken right now. Teachers are heroes and trying their best right now. However, we live in a new virtual world. Let’s start adding time zones to the curriculum. AND geography… because I can’t get over how many people asked me if it was hot in Reno because it’s hot in Vegas.
I have a new internal rule for myself. If I’m interacting with a new potential intern and they don’t list their time zone when requesting a time for an interview, I AUTOMATICALLY assume they’re dumb. Unless it is assumed because you see the person face to face or the event is in a certain area, you HAVE to list the time zone for whatever the occasion is.
What do these people do when they travel? They get off the plane and notice it’s a different time. Do they think everyone operates in the same time zone?
Learn your time zones. Nobody knows where you live. Nobody cares. Just list the time zone. Otherwise, the rest of us that have a brain automatically assume you’re dumb.
