About a month ago, I reacted to the USWNT loss versus Sweden to open the 2020 Olympics. Their loss was evidence of a pretty major issue:
The USWNT has held on to the core from their World Cup-winning squads of 2015 and 2019. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but at some point those players lose a step. The average age of the USWNT is 29.7 years old. Again, not a bad thing, but these players can’t stick around forever. At some point the core will need to go, and the 3-0 drubbing from Sweden is evidence that the time for that is fast approaching.
The USWNT still has time to turn it around and bring home the Olympic gold. Losing to Sweden merely pulled back the curtain on the possibility that their world-leading dynasty may be ending soon.
“After USWNT Got Smacked By Sweden, Is the Dynasty Over?”
The USWNT walked away from the Tokyo Olympics with a bronze medal, which wasn’t the type of success their supporters were accustomed to seeing. The talent gap between the USA and the rest of the world has shrunk dramatically over the last few years. Even more now that Carli Lloyd has announced her retirement from international football. Throughout the Olympics, the 39-year-old Lloyd looked like the best player on the team. She was constantly creating scoring opportunities and generally being a problem for opposing defenses. Now that she is gone, the roster turnover I spoke of in my previous post is starting. Is this the end of USWNT international dominance?
