Can Jameis Winston Be A Reliable QB For 2021 Fantasy?

Jameis Winston has had an interesting career, to say the least. From dominating college football at FSU, to the number one overall pick to the Buccaneers, throwing 30 touchdowns and 30 INTs to signing with the Saints as Drew Brees’ backup. Assuming Jameis can win the starting job over Taysom Hill in New Orleans, can Winston be a reliable quarterback for fantasy?

We have not seen or heard much of Jameis since he arrived in New Orleans. Other than the trick play against the Bears in the playoffs, he has not played that many meaningful snaps for the Saints. I expect Jameis to beat out Taysom Hill for the starting job. Not only does he have a better arm but I think Hill is suited best as an offensive gadget. Hill is an elite athlete and will get snaps even with Winston under center. If you start Taysom Hill, you can’t really plug Jameis in other than for trick plays.

I know the last season Jameis played with Tampa Bay he threw 30 interceptions. But he did throw for over 5,000 yards and 33 touchdowns. Winston’s issue has never been productivity, it has been his decision making that has plagued his efficiency. Maybe a year under Sean Payton and Drew Brees helps Jameis limit his reckless play.

This Saints offense has weapons. Alvin Kamara is a top-three running back in this league. Michael Thomas, while he is missing the beginning part of this season, has proven to be an elite receiver and Tre’Quan Smith showed flashes in 2020. New Orleans also has a formidable offensive line. Terron Armstead is a solid left tackle, Cesar Ruiz and Andrus Peat fill out the guard positions and Ryan Ramzcyk just signed a massive extension.

In 2019, Jameis Winston finished as the 5th ranked QB in fantasy. If he can cut his interceptions in half from 2019, is it crazy to think he could finish in the top-15 for quarterbacks. I think Jameis is going to surprise people this year and get his career back on track. With above-average weapons, a year under Drew Bress paired with an offensive guru in Sean Payton, Jameis has the support he needs.
