What Does Conor McGregor Need To Do To Win At UFC 264?
The UFC has had some classic trilogies in their storied history, but the trilogy between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor at UFC 264 is bound to be one of the best in their history. Both fights were ended by KO, one win for each man. As we draw closer to July 10th, fans all over the world are asking themselves who will win the third fight? What does each fighter need to do or change heading into this fight to ensure victory? Well, for Conor McGregor, I will give you three things he MUST do to make sure he leaves Las Vegas with a second victory over Poirier.
#1: Block The Leg Kicks
I know I am stating the obvious here, because the leg kicks of Dustin Poirier were one of the main reasons he lost his last fight. But throughout his career, Conor McGregor has had an issue blocking leg kicks. Both fights against Nate Diaz his legs were getting chewed up, especially in the second fight. The game plan was clear in the camp of Poirier that his legs are a weakness if you can get to them and get to them early. McGregor’s style allows him to be so fluid on his feet, always changing stances and being unpredictable with his strikes. If McGregor can find a way to block even half any oncoming leg kicks, he will be in better shape than he was back in January.
#2: More Head Movement
Like I mentioned above, McGregor’s biggest strength is his movement. In his early days, he was arguably the best in the world at it. Whatever the case may be, he just doesn’t seem to have that same energy to move around as he did. That was apparent in his first fight with Nate Diaz, his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov, and his last fight with Poirier. More commitment to really bobbing and weaving in there and trying to slip punches and counter more can lead him to success. Poirier in his career has caught plenty of power punches off of the counter when he gets reckless. If Conor can find the movement he had years ago, it should set him up well.
#3: Maybe Showing A Level Of Commitment
I just talked about wondering where the Conor of old had gone to, and that he just doesn’t look the same anymore. My guess? His heart isn’t in it anymore. I don’t believe he’s training as hard as he once did, his passion for the sport maybe has died out. We know that going into their last fight, Conor had a lack of respect for Poirier. I know it is a little too late to now try and fix this, but if Conor went into this camp actually 100% invested in it, I firmly believe he will come out on top. I am of the opinion Conor is one of the most underrated fighters in UFC history, and if he gives his all through training camp and leading up to fight week, I don’t know many men who can defeat The Notorious one.
Come July 10th and the cage door closes, the world will get to watch one of the best trilogies in UFC history come to a close. These are the things I believe Conor McGregor needs to work on going into this fight, and it will be interesting to see if he takes my advice and puts it to use.
