For the longest time, it seemed Brewers pitcher Corbin Burnes could not figure it out on the mound. His numbers were dismal and it seemed that day in and day out he was getting shelled by the opponent. It got to the point where he had historically the worst pitching year in Milwaukee Brewers history in 2019. His earned run average ballooned to a staggering 8.82 in 40 innings. Yikes. This is an organization that has been around for almost 50 years so this is surely a milestone.
Then the monumental change occurred. Burnes seemed to “get it” in 2020. Despite a shortened season, he recorded nine starts with 59 innings. His ERA sank drastically to an astounding 2.11. As a result, he finished sixth in Cy Young voting. In his 2021 season, he is already dominant in two starts holding a 0.73 ERA including a nine strikeout performance against the Chicago Cubs.
So what changed? It was Corbin mostly ditching his somewhat ineffective fastball. His fastball was so bad that hitters were hitting .425 off of it and slugging .823 in 2019. The fastball itself was straight and had no movement. He learned his lesson and opted for his cutter for the 2020 season as his primary pitch. He also used his sinker more effectively and took the effort to mix up his pitches. In 2021, his cutter got even better somehow. The pitch is thrown even harder and shown to have even more movement. It’s scary when you think about it. It’ll be fun to see how Burnes’ 2021 season pans out. He could be one of the most dominant pitchers in all of baseball.
