Corey Davis has signed with the New York Jets. They have agreed to a 3-year deal worth $12.5 per year. This will be the first of many for a Jets roster that needs a lot done this offseason. The news comes from Twitter per Schefter.
The former fifth overall pick out of Western Michigan has not completely lived up to expectations given the high draft capital. However, Davis finished the best season in his 4-year career. Totaling 984 yards and 5 touchdowns on 65 catches are career-highs in all categories. Coming out of a run-first offense in Tennessee, Davis did not have as many targets as most receivers, so we do not truly know what his ceiling looks like.
A depleted roster, which the Jets have, needs someone such as Davis who can come in and become their immediate number one receiver. Opposite of the young Denzel Mims and the aging Jamison Crowder, the Jets were desperately searching for a pass-catcher for either Sam Darnold or a rookie they may take with the second overall pick in the draft.
Regardless of who is slinging the ball for New York next season, Corey Davis is a huge addition to a disappointing receiving corps. After owning the second-worst passing attack in the league (2,796 yards), major changes are coming to this New York Jets offense. Robert Saleh has taken over the head coaching position following the departure of Adam Gase, and this is one of his first major roster changes. Going into this offseason, the Jets possessed the third-most cap space of $68 million, therefore, more signings will be done come to the end of free agency for the Jets.
