Gary Sanchez Looks To Be A Potential MVP Candidate

Gary Sanchez

Yankee catcher Gary Sanchez has incredibly high expectations of himself for the 2021 season. He had a dismal season last year, and already is attempting to better himself both defensively and offensively. He even arrived early to Spring Training to work especially on his plate blocking abilities and to possibly break out as an MVP candidate.

Sanchez holds the American League record for fastest player to reach 100 career home runs. His best full season came in 2017, hitting .278 with 33 home runs and driving in 90 runs. He earned an All-star appearance and a Silver Slugger award. He hasn’t been able to progress as much in recent years, receiving criticism for his strikeout rates and his poor defensive ability. 2020 marked his worst season offensively hitting a terrible .147 and a .618 OPS. The power was there with 10 home runs in the shortened season, but he knew he had to make changes.

“He has really invested himself into what we’re doing and has refined his process. He’s putting a lot of quality work in and we’re seeing that transfer to the game. He’s spoken a little bit regarding his overall comfort with some of the adjustments we made last year and continue to refine now. I think he’s in a really good place.” -Tanner Swanson

He arrived at 2021’s Spring Training in Florida two weeks ahead of schedule working out daily with Yankees catching coach Tanner Swanson. In one week of Spring Training, Sanchez already has four hits including two home runs. It will be interesting to see how the powerful catcher is able to handle his new improvements.

Jordan Montgomery

Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery has been lights out so far this spring. He pitched three scoreless innings today against the Philadelphia Phillies throwing 42 pitches and striking out one. Gumby has a lot of confidence and has taken note of teammate Corey Kluber’s pitching style in order to improve his work on the mound. He is currently fighting for a spot in the team’s stacked rotation.
