Now that the Detroit Lions have traded Matthew Stafford away and let him finally have a chance to be on a winning team. They got two first-round picks and Jared Goff which isn’t a bad deal. If you ask me the Lions won that trade. This does not mean that they don’t have work to do this offseason, however. The top three things that they need to work on this offseason include Wide Receiver, Linebacker, and Defensive Tackle.
Arguably the biggest need, the Lions started the 2021 offseason with 2 WR’s on the roster. Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr., and Danny Amendola are all free agents and it is likely that they would not be able to sign all three to the contracts that they want. With that being said, there are a couple of options for them. They can sign one of those three receivers if they want, I personally would sign Marvin Jones Jr. in that situation. Then they can go and use one of their picks to draft a Reciever. Currently, the mock drafts have the Lions taking Devonta Smith at number 7, which would help a lot.
Similar to the WR’s, the Lions have only one Middle Linebacker on the roster currently. Also, depending on the defensive scheme they decide to run this season, they will need another Outside Linebacker or two. This is a problem for obvious reasons. What they could do is try to sign a cheap MLB/OLB and then draft one or two in the draft this April. Regardless of what scheme they decide to operate out of, though, they will need at least one MLB to add some depth to the position. A cheap option the Lions could look into are Thomas Davis, Mychal Kendricks, Sean Lee, or Malcolm Smith.
The Lions have defensive tackles Danny Shelton, Da’Shawn Hand, Nick Williams, and John Penisini coming back next season. However, Williams may be released to free up cap space while Hand’s health remains a concern. Penisini played well but needs to significantly step up his game if he wants to compete with other free agents that may be brought in. That leaves Danny Shelton as the only DT that can be relied on week in and week out. They need to go and snag a middle of the pack DT to help take some of the pressure off of Shelton. This could be guys like Damon Harrison or Maliek Collins, guys who are relatively cheap.
Overall, the Lions are in a reasonable spot considering that they are in a rebuild currently. This could be the start of something good finally in
Detroit.
