Didi Gregorius Signs Contract to Stay in Philadelphia
Didi Gregorius signs to remain with the Phillies for at least the next two years after signing a contract to remain with the team.
Didi, who first signed with the Phillies in December of 2019 on a one year deal worth $14 million dollars is keeping the same base pay, signing a 2 year $28 million dollar contract. The shortstop was previously a member of the Yankees, taking over for the legendary captain Derek Jeter.
While in New York Gregorius was coached by Joe Girardi, the former Yankee catcher turned manager. Girardi just so happens to be the manager of the Phillies now, so it seems like a great fit for the shortstop.
Didi was a top 10 offensive shortstop in the shortened season, hitting .286 with 10 homers. He had 40 RBIs which was the third best for his position.
The Phillies have been undergoing some organizational change over the past few years, from top to bottom they have brought in new pieces to try and reach the playoffs and eventually try and bring home a World Series back to Philadelphia.
After finishing 3rd in the NL East with a record of 28-32, the team brought in former Red Sox executive Dave Dombrowski who spent four years in Boston, bringing the city a World Series championship in 2018. The two-year deal Didi signed leaves the team in a decent spot where they can allow their top shortstop prospect some more time to develop in the minors. If things go well for the prospect, the contract should be an easy one to move via trade
The Phillies have a lot of their payroll with Bryce Harper signing a mega deal over 13 years and $330 million dollars. Having Didi locked up for the next two years will help bolster the middle infield for the Phillies and give them some stability for the near future.
