“The future will tell us who is right”. That’s what Jonathan Marchessault said when he left Vegas to sign a five-year contract with the Nashville Predators. The 2024-25 NHL regular season is coming to a close soon and it’s pretty obvious who was right. The Golden Knights are in first place, while Marchessault looks like a shell of himself playing for one of the worst teams in the league.
With roughly ten games to go in Marchessault’s first season after leaving the Golden Knights, he’s singing a much different tune now. Marchessault is throwing himself a pity party and now says this season has been very challenging from a mental health perspective.
“It’s definitely been a hard season for me, personally,” said Marchessault, who still holds Vegas’ franchise record with 192 goals, and also 42 power-play goals. “I didn’t expect the move to be that big, in terms of (draining my) energy. … I think it was just a really tough summer, to be honest. Not a lot of time for me and my wife to just relax and enjoy life a little bit. So it’s been definitely overwhelming.
“Mental health (has been) challenging this year. But if you look at my past, and the way I’m built and all that, I will bounce back.”
This is total BS, and he knows it. The truth is, Marchessault is suffering from the disease of me. He chose greed and held firm on needing the fifth year in free agency despite being at an advanced age. Marchessault could have easily accepted Vegas’ offer for the same money at one fewer year. NOPE. He chose greed and now is suffering the consequences for it.
Sorry, but this is so embarrassing. If Marchessault had any pride, he would take some accountability for having a tough season. It turns out playing with Jack Eichel is a really nice luxury to have. Marchessault, 34, scored 42 goals with Vegas last year and is now down to 19 with a -25 rating on the season.
The job of a general manager is to figure out why a team wins and why a team loses. Vegas was never winning because of Marchessault. They win because of how loaded they are down the middle with the best top six D core in the league. Credit to Kelly McCrimmon for not caving to selfish Marchessault. By the way, Vegas’ powerplay has been significantly better without him and is operating at a league-best 30.4%.
Karma works in mysterious ways, but it favors those who pay attention. This is karma. Nothing less. Nothing more.
