It’s a weak wide receiver draft but guys like Jayden Higgins could change that narrative. The Iowa State wide out is very much a wildcard and is an interesting conversation to have for many reasons. With that said, let’s not waste any more time and get to his 2025 NFL Draft profile!
NFL Draft Stock Report: Conference Championships, Pop-Tarts Bowl, Senior Bowl (1), (2), (3), Game
Higgins, 22, was a two star prospect coming out of high school, but that doesn’t really tell the full story. He has a basketball background, and once upon a time, that was thought to be the path he would take. Higgins spent two years at Eastern Kentucky and started football very late. The last two years were spent at Iowa State, and that’s when football really started to become the pure focus.
The Miami, Florida native checks in at 6-foot-4, 214, and an 80 inch wingspan. The basketball background very much shows up in the play style. Good at winning those contested catch situations. Big body who rebounds and actually has nice hands. I think the encouraging part here is that the speed is real, and he can actually run real routes.
Higgins was kinda all over the map for me. I saw him a few times during the season and wasn’t really impressed. Then started to grow on me over time. Add in a really nice Senior Bowl and Combine, I’ve started to understand the intrigue. A 4.47 time at that size is something.
If you’re looking for red flags, you can find them. He’s not overly polished and you can find plenty of times where the quicksand hits him in and out of breaks. It’s Hakeem Butler PTSD all over again. Limited route tree, can’t sink his hips a lick, and is constantly in a jump ball spot. How’s that going to translate? That gear in and out of breaks is non-existent.
2024 was really the breakout year for Higgins. The Iowa State wide out posted 87 receptions for 1,183 yards and nine scores. It was a nice increase from the 983 yards he had the season before. I’ll also say this. I don’t care what anybody says. Rocco Becht can play. Anybody who says he had egregiously bad QB play needs to get their head checked. He’s not stiff though. More smooth and fluid than some of these other tall guys that have come out in the past.
I think a middle round grade on Jayden Higgins is fair. Somewhere between round 3-5 is where I think it’s safe to pull the trigger here. Although he’s very much a wildcard. Basketball background and still very much raw. It’s hard to feel confident about totally what you’re getting, but the skillset to take a shot on a development round grade is worth the dart throw here. He’s very much a project and would assume he’s going to go sooner than I’m willing to pick him.
