Russell Wilson Signs With New York Giants

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson has signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants, worth up to $21.5 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed. The multi-time Pro Bowler had been in negotiations with the Giants, Cleveland Browns, and to re-join the Steelers. He will enter 2025 training camp battling newly acquired Jameis Winston for the starting quarterback spot.

Wilson, 35, was a disaster for the Steelers in 2025, taking over midway through the season for the 4-2 Justin Fields, who signed this off-season with the New York Jets. As the starter in Pittsburgh, Wilson went 6-5, throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns to five interceptions over his 11 starts. Wilson’s lack of mobility, brutal pocket awareness, and fading touch on his throws ultimately led to his poor play, resulting in yet another first-round exit for the Steelers.

But the real story is this, and it comes in two parts.

First, by signing Russell Wilson, did the New York Giants tell us the first two selections in the 2025 NFL Draft are going to be Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Redacted (Shedeur Sanders)? Why else would the Giants go out and sign Wilson and Winston if they believed one of the two rookies would be there? Do they know something the public doesn’t?

If the first statement is true, then secondly, they are accepting the fact that they will be a bottom-dwelling team in 2025, and are punting this quarterback decision to 2026, which is smart. If everyone declares, the 2026 NFL Draft class at quarterback could be LOADED. The Giants wouldn’t have to be the first overall pick to get a high-caliber starter.

Russell Wilson to the New York Giants makes zero sense for the franchise, but it is also a high-risk for Wilson, too. If Russ can’t beat out JAMEIS WINSTON, his career really is over. This is surely his last chance to carve out a starting job in the NFL. He’s certainly being paid as if he is the preemptive starter in the Big Apple, but we will know more in the summer.
