John Schneider Explains Why The Seahawks Moved On From Geno Smith

Why did the Seahawks trade Geno Smith? Now that the dust has settled on everything, we sure know why now. You’re going to want to check this cheese out. John Schneider

“We made an offer to Geno, tried to extend him,” Schneider said. “It became apparent that we weren’t going to be able to get a deal done. Yeah, it wasn’t like a very long negotiation. And so, as a staff, we had to be prepared to pivot.”

It was reported that Geno would have cashed in on a contract with Seattle that would have paid him around $40 million annually. Once that deal was turned down, the Seahawks pivoted to Sam Darnold. The new deal Darnold signed puts him at $33.5 million per year.

When you really boil it down, Schneider deserves a ton of credit for the way he pivoted. Got two premium draft picks to do it too. Essentially followed the same formula with DK Metcalf and Cooper Kupp too. Seattle trades Metcalf to Pittsburgh, the Steelers have to give Metcalf $30 million per year, then pick up Kupp for half the price while collecting a second rounder.

Schneider is putting on a clinic right now. If Seattle can really nail these extra draft picks they have, they are serious contenders to not only make the playoffs but win the NFC West.

Let’s close with this. If the Seahawks couldn’t get Geno extended for $40 million per year… I can’t imagine WTF the Raiders are going to do contract wise. Good luck with all that!
