In a surprising development, the Washington Football Team has cut running back Adrian Peterson. Peterson’s release marks the second cut Washington has made to their backfield in the last month, following the release of running back Derrius Guice.
Adrian Peterson played two seasons in the nation’s capital, leading the franchise in rushing yards in both 2018 and 2019. Overall, he rushed for 1,940 yards and 12 touchdowns while with the team.
This stunning release stands to provide a greatly expanded role to Washington Football Team rookie Antonio Gibson. Gibson, a third-round pick out of Memphis, has reportedly impressed in preseason camp. He is now the undisputed RB1 heading into the first week of the NFL season. This change stands to have fantasy implications as well.
Peterson has been named to the NFL Pro Bowl seven times and was the NFL MVP in 2012. He currently sits at fifth all-time in rushing yards and fourth in rushing touchdowns. AP will need to find another franchise with which to continue his Hall of Fame career.
Potential suitors include the Chicago Bears, who may be looking for RB depth with David Montgomery out following an injury. As of now, there is no concrete news regarding where Peterson will land. More information will be available following final roster cuts across the NFL.
