The Stars got hit with the injury bug again. If there is anything clear, it’s that the Stars will need to add some D help prior to the deadline. It has been revealed that Nils Lundkvist has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024-25 NHL Season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
The Dallas Stars announced the news via their team account:
“GM Jim Nill has announced that Nils Lundkvist underwent season-ending shoulder surgery. Both Nils Lundkvist and Tyler Seguin have been placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR).”
Tyler Seguin was also successfully transferred to LTIR in a corresponding move that should free up a bunch of cap space for Dallas. Seguin underwent another hip procedure and if he returns, it will be for the playoffs only.
Lundkvist, 24, has five assists and no goals through 39 games this season for Dallas. The former Rangers first round pick isn’t exactly a huge loss given the role he’s been playing. He’s been playing roughly 15 minutes per night in a really sheltered role. He can’t defend a lick but can kinda move the puck in an offensive role. He was virtually unplayable in the playoffs during Dallas’ run last season.
Lundkvist is a restricted free agent after the conclusion of this season. Right now, he’s only earning $1.25 million so Dallas won’t exactly save a ton of money by LTIR but every penny counts during deadline time. We’ll see who Dallas acquires to try to fill the holes on the blue line.
