I just want to know why it’s necessary for you people to be so ignorant. The way we cover the NFL is absolutely insane so I hope Trey can be the voice of reason for this one. Everyone wants to beat up on Sam Darnold today but it mostly comes from the mouths of ignorant people who have never accomplished anything in their entire life.
There is one answer on what the Vikings should do with Darnold and I don’t know how it’s arguable.
Tag, you’re it. See you guys next year.
It’s the only answer and I’d be willing to debate anybody on this. Nobody, of course, would take me up on that because they would look foolish for a number of different reasons.
A: The Vikings had a great year. Nobody except for Trey thought that was going to be the case prior to the year. If you told anyone before the start of the year the Vikings would end up winning 14 games and make the playoffs, everybody laughs in your face.
Except that’s exactly what happened. Darnold exceeded expectations but people do what they always do. Move the goal posts and mock them while remaining miserable with their own lives.
B: The Vikings had a fantastic year. They should be praised by how they handled the QB position. They said no to Kirk Cousins. That was 100% the right decision. Something I tried to tell you but nobody wanted to listen or give the Vikings credit on after the fact.
Can you imagine if the Vikings caved to what Cousins wanted and were stuck with the contract Atlanta gave out? That’s a far worse outcome. The production the Vikings got out of Darnold based on the $10 million they paid him should be celebrated. They said no to the outrageous QB prices and got rewarded with a 14 win season. Something thought outlandish by everybody before the season.
C: If the Rams and Vikings swapped QBs during the playoff game, the Rams still win. I understand nobody wants to hear that but it’s the truth. Minnesota had no answer for the Rams front of Byron Young, Jared Verse, Kobie Turner, and Braden Fiske. The Rams had nine sacks in the game and had pressure on Darnold basically every snap. That’s what won the game. Plus, Sean McVay mentored Kevin O’Connell and probably had a perfect gameplan against the coach he knows very well. To throw Darnold under the bus considering all of that is so ignorant.
Darnold was a top 10 QB this year and I’m not sure how it’s arguable.
D: The franchise tag exists. Why wouldn’t you use it? There is no rush to get JJ McCarthy on the field. The longer he sits and learns the better. McCarthy was always a player who needed extra development and Darnold was far too good this year to just let walk.
The tag exists for a reason. It buys you time without having to make a long term commitment. To bring a guy back on a one year deal who threw 35 touchdowns makes all the sense in the world. Draft a few offensive linemen and give the keys to McCarthy in 2026. I’m just not sure why this is so hard. Not to mention the fact that if you hit Darnold with the tag, you can always trade him for far more than a comp pick you will get letting him walk.
I’m begging you. Please don’t be ignorant. Instead of being a scumbag and tearing down a player who was stuck playing for the Jets and Panthers who turned who career around, I advise you to be a better human for all of the reasons I just said.
