It sure feels like Craig Breslow and Jerry Dipoto are on the verge of a trade. Seattle somehow said no when Boston offered Triston Casas in exchange for one of their young arms. Instead, Seattle is said to be open to moving Luis Castillo and is definitely on the trade block.
Reports indicate that Seattle is open to moving Castillo because they have their heart set on first baseman Christian Walker. It would appear that Seattle can’t afford Walker right now unless they move out some money. Moving out Castillo’s money.
Castillo, 31, is owed $72 million over the next three years. There are some additional option years baked into the deal too. If Boston takes the contract off their hands, it would open up the money to sign the veteran first baseman.
Given how old Peter Gammons is, I understand if you take what he says with a grain of salt. Totally understandable. However, he still has Boston roots and is usually in the right direction when he talks Sox. Gammons says Craig Breslow is working “tirelessly” to acquire the right-handed starter.
“Craig Breslow is tireless, he’s really smart, and if he can clear Castillo’s money, give Seattle help elsewhere and allow them to get (Christian) Walker, maybe he gets Castillo,” one fellow general manager told The Athletic’s Peter Gammons on Friday.
A dream scenario for the Red Sox would be if they could just eat the contract without sending much in return. Sending out Masataka Yoshida as the headliner would be icing on the cake. Based on what we’ve seen from Breslow to this point, I’m not sure he’s smart enough to pull this off but Red Sox fans everywhere sure hope to be proven wrong on that.
