Mariners, Luis Castillo Agree To Contract Extension
No need to wait, Jerry Dipoto gets things done. Aggressive wins and Dipoto always knows what he wants. If you needed further evidence, peep paying rookie sensation Julio Rodriguez about as soon as possible. Dipoto got his guy again and found a way to secure him long term. Luis Castillo has signed a contract extension with Seattle.
Jeff Passan of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Castillo, 29, was scheduled to become a free agent after the 2023 MLB season. Now, Castillo gets paid early. He even gets a no-trade clause over the first three years of the deal. Good for Dipoto here because Castillo has pitched well for Seattle and now he got him to sign an under market contract extension.
With the way Castillo has pitched as of late, he could have made way more than this if he continued that momentum next year. He must love it in Seattle and you can’t really blame him for accepting the offer. With the way arm injuries are, maybe Castillo felt like the security was too good to pass. Castillo has a 2.83 ERA in 9 starts with the Mariners.
Seattle gave up a lot to acquire Castillo via Cincinnati. However, getting Castillo signed long term helps cushion that acquisition cost. The Mariners gave up big time prospect capital to go get their new ace. Good for the Mariners. A team that has the longest postseason drought in MLB is about to be in the mix again. Castillo has helped turn the Mariners into a team even their fan base can believe in.
