Kelly McCrimmon is cooking back there in the Vegas front office. During the midst of this season, the Golden Knights have already extended Shea Theodore, Brayden McNabb, and now Brett Howden.
Howden, 26, was a free agent to be after the conclusion of the 2024-25 NHL Season. Not anymore after signing a five year deal with the Golden Knights. The new deal will carry an AAV of $2.5 million.
The team itself was the first to report the news:
“VEGAS (November 22, 2024) – Vegas Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon announced today, November 22, that the team has signed forward Brett Howden to a five-year contract extension through the 2029-30 NHL season worth an average annual value of $2,500,000.”
Howden is also in the midst of his best season ever. Through 20 games, Howden has eight goals. His career high is nine. The former first round pick by the Lightning in 2016 is on a 1.9 million AAV right now. With the cap expected to skyrocket, the VGK essentially gave him a slight raise while stretching out the turn. It appears to be a great deal for both sides keeping the price tag low while Howden, a former waiver claim, gets security. Not to mention the fact that Howden was terrific during the Stanley Cup playoffs the year Vegas won the Cup.
The pieces of the roster continue to fall into place. At this rate, a Keegan Kolesar extension will be announced tomorrow. Signing another player to a hometown rate only signals one thing in my mind. The Mitch Marner chase in free agency is very much on their radar.
