Shea Theodore Inks 7-Year Extension With Vegas

Kelly McCrimmon did it again!!! Extension talks with Shea Theodore seemed quiet… until it wasn’t. The Vegas Golden Knights have announced they are signing the talented puck moving defenseman to a new seven-year extension.

“VEGAS (October 24, 2024) – Vegas Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon announced today, October 24, that the team has signed defenseman Shea Theodore to a seven-year contract extension through the 2031-2032 season worth an average annual value of $7,425,000.”

Shea Theodore: What Does Possible Contract Extension With The Golden Knights Look Like?

Theodore, 29, has notched 90 points in his last 108 games played. Durability is the only reason why this $7.425 million AAV is as low as it is. This is one of the best offensive defenseman in the sport. He just hasn’t played over 70 games since the 2021 NHL Season. The no-state tax that Vegas has at their disposal also keeps this number at a lower rate. Theodore has been with the team since day one and has a +65 rating during his time in Vegas.

Evolving-Hockey projected Theodore to land an eight-year extension worth just over $9 million per season. That’s a huge discount based on what Vegas got him signed for. I can only imagine what Theo could have gotten on the open market. This has to be viewed as a huge win for Kelly McCrimmon and the entire front office.

The advanced metrics all side with Theodore being an elite player. Theodore has posted a 58.8% Corsi% and 91.0% on-ice save%. That’s while skating around roughly 22 minutes per night.
