The Philadelphia Phillies bullpen can’t get much worse. Not a joke. The Phillies bullpen is beyond brutal. Today, GM Matt Klentak did something about it. He called the tanking Boston Red Sox and has officially acquired Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman. Both of whom are pure rentals and will hit free agency after this season.
The Phillies and Red Sox announced the details of the trade:
It was obvious the Red Sox needed to trade both players. Boston is in rebuild mode. Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree were two bullpen pieces that a contender would want and easy trade chips. Both Workman and Hembree were rentals so they had to go.
I want the record to show I hate this trade. There are ten days until the deadline. Why are you settling for Nick Pivetta? I don’t get it. I’m a Chaim Bloom believer but this is beyond stupid. Pivetta has a 15.88 ERA in 2020 across 5.2 innings. Add in a career ERA of 5.50 in 4 years. He also comes with only 3 years of control and will hit arbitration. Connor Seabold is a no name 24-year-old arm who hasn’t hit AAA yet.

For Philadelphia, you get someone in Workman who might walk a fair share of hitters but never gives up home runs and is as reliable as it gets. Interestingly enough, the Phillies drafted Workman but he did not sign and pursued college ball at Texas. Both Workman and Hembree will likely be in line for major roles at the back of games. Plus, it’s a super low acquisition cost.
