Dodgers Expected To Heavily Pursue Willy Adames In Free Agency

The Dodgers already have the highest payroll in baseball entering the 2025 MLB Offseason but they plan to spend heavily again anyway. LA is still in the mix this postseason but win or lose, it looks like they have their sights set on who they want to target in free agency. Willy Adames appears to be the team’s number one target.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post:

“People around the league see the Dodgers as a possible favorite to land star free-agent shortstop Willy Adames. Dodgers bigwigs Andrew Friedman and Brandon Gomes had him at Tampa Bay.”

“Adames has been a frequent trade target of the Dodgers, Braves and Giants, and Atlanta also could use him now, but with a $200 million-plus price tag, he might be pricey for them (they let their own longtime SS Dansby Swanson go for $177M to the Cubs).”

“Mets baseball prez David Stearns acquired Adames for Milwaukee. Could they use him at third, and move Mark Vientos to first base if Pete Alonso leaves?”

It’s not really surprising that the Dodgers want to sign Adames. For those who recall, Andrew Friedman used to run the Rays. The Friedman-led Rays traded David Price to Detroit for Adames when he was a prospect. The Dodgers also don’t have a reliable shortstop right now. Tommy Edman is playing that spot for them in the postseason but he’s really more of a centerfielder. Mookie Betts had a failed experiment at shortstop already this year. Miguel Rojas isn’t anything special. Adames would really solidify that spot for LA.

Heyman also lists the Mets as a possible suitor, which would also make sense given that David Stearns acquired Adames when he ran the Brewers.

Side note: This is just my opinion… but I think anyone who gives $200+ million to Adames is a crackhead. I understand that Adames is coming off a 32 homer / .794 OPS season but we’re also one season removed from a season where he hit .217. I’m way out on paying Adames that type of coin.
