There is a quarterback change in Pittsburgh. The Steelers are 4-2 (they should be 5-1 but Tomlin pissed the Cowboys game away with terrible clock management) but apparently, that’s not good enough for Mike Tomlin. The Steelers are benching Justin Fields in favor of Russell Wilson heading into Week 7.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
Sorry, not sorry, Tomlin is a complete idiot for this move. No, Fields isn’t perfect but he’s helped them win games and put them in this spot. The Steelers are in a tie for first place in the AFC North right now. Fields is completing 66.3% of his throws and has accounted for ten total touchdowns. It’s one thing to make this move. Why are you doing it NOW?
Does Russell Wilson have dirt on the Steelers? Did they watch him play the last two years? The guy is totally cooked in a bad way. Wilson turns 36 in November and hasn’t actually been good at football since 2020. Under no circumstance does this move make sense.
When people tell you who they are, believe them. Mike Tomlin continues to prove over and over again that he has zero understanding of offensive football. It’s been proved over and over again. May I remind you that it wasn’t too long ago that Tomlin defended Mitch Trubisky. Are people really forgetting about the time Tomlin said Trubisky would start the entire 2022-23 NFL Season, and then changed his mind because he had no idea Trubisky stunk? Smart people knew Trubisky sucked in 2017. It took Tomlin six years later to learn that lesson and suffered the consequences for it.
Some people at the website think Tomlin should be fired. When this thing goes south, it’s hard to disagree. The Steelers will never get back to their glory days if Tomlin remains this clueless on the offensive side of the ball. This is the type of move that makes players question your authority. A very easy way to lose the locker room. Wilson remains incredibly unlikeable and the team will turn on him the second it’s easy for them to do so.
To make this move while being in first place is insane. That’s all that really needs to be said. It’s indefensible and Tomlin will be forced to stick his tail between his legs when they’re forced to go back to Fields when Wilson tanks the season. That’s coming.
