Why Losing Xander Bogaerts Somehow Turned Into A Blessing In Disguise For The Red Sox

I say this all the time about the NBA. Sometimes the wrong decision can turn into the right decision. The smart Boston Celtics fans out there should already understand this. The Malcolm Brogdon trade sucked from day one. Trading Aaron Nesmith and a first round pick for a broken down version of Brogdon was incredibly stupid. Except it turned out to be a great thing because the Celtics needed Brogdon’s salary slot in order to execute the Jrue Holiday trade. A similar thing happened with Xander Bogaerts and it needs to be talked about.

The Red Sox handled the Xander Bogaerts thing about as poorly as possible. The sad part is they have been rewarded in the end. Let me explain because a lot of people may not fully realize what’s going on here.

Boston had every opportunity to keep Bogaerts. A player who loved being in Boston so much that he told management that he was refusing to take days off at home because the fans deserved a chance to see him. Bogaerts has a great head on his shoulders and was a great player for the organization for a long time. He even took a discounted extension well before he should have. That’s not even talking about the fact that Bogaerts was offered more money in the international market and still chose to sign with Boston.

Chaim Bloom handled all of it wrong once he got the keys. They offered Bogaerts a disrespectful extension and then turned around signing Masatake Yoshida and Trevor Story with the money that should have gone to him. Neither signing has worked out and Bogaerts eventually fled to San Diego. To make matters worse, Bloom idiotically stayed over the luxury tax during a year Boston didn’t make the playoffs. That meant Boston received a fourth round comp pick for Bogaerts leaving instead of what should have been a 2nd rounder.

Boston couldn’t have handled the Bogaerts thing worse. Yet they are somehow rewarded in the end.

Guess what ended up happening with that comp pick that should have been a second round pick but instead turned into a 4th rounder?

You can’t make it up. That 4th round pick somehow turned into Kristian Campbell. You know… the guy who won minor league player of the year across the sport…

Talk about a lucky horseshoe. Campbell is viewed as one of the best prospects in the sport and should be a staple for the Red Sox lineup for years to come.

I don’t know what the Red Sox did to deserve this good karma but it’s hard to ignore how lucky they got here. If and when Campbell turns into a stud for the big league team, we’ll all have to thank the Red Sox for the way they mismanaged things with Bogaerts which somehow turned into an extreme positive.

The power of the Chinese farmer remains undefeated.
