If you read this week’s stock report notes, we went into detail on the Oklahoma loss to Tennessee. The Sooners got beat but it wasn’t about losing to a surging Tennessee program. It had everything to do with how Brent Venables handled it. Josh Heupel outclassed Venables in every facet of the game. Instead of Venables taking the blame, he threw Jackson Arnold under the bus and he should be ashamed of himself for doing so.
When people tell you who they are, believe them. This Venables has no clue. His defense is fine. His recruiting is fine. His offensive acumen is not.
Oklahoma fans had a right to be excited about what Arnold was going to bring to the table. The Bowl game performance wasn’t great but we’re talking about a guy who won the Elite 11 and showed major progress this season. Arnold played well in every other game this season excluding the Tennessee matchup where his offensive line got destroyed and got forced into turning the ball over.
Let’s not forget Dillon Gabriel left because Arnold was waiting in the wings. Then Venables pretended that he had no idea Gabriel was getting ready to leave. Talk about having zero pulse on the program.
“I did not know at that time that he wasn’t going to go to the NFL. … I didn’t even know I had to fight this fight,” Venables said. “I didn’t even realize that you were even considering coming back. And he says, ‘Yeah, but I just want to get closer to home’. We hugged and shook hands. He was a little emotional and I was. It was all really good and positive.”
Anybody who answers a question like that isn’t very intelligent. Do you notice how he phrases the response here?
“I did not know”
“I didn’t know”
“I didn’t realize”
Your job is to know buddy. That’s why Oklahoma pays you millions of dollars to be the head coach.
This puppy is done. Oklahoma will become a stepping stone program in the SEC. If you can’t beat the Sooners, you’re not a real contender. That’s the road we’re going down as long as Venables remains in charge. He’s not head coaching material and should just go back to Clemson to be their defensive coordinator again.
It’s only a matter of time before Venables becomes exposed, and I’d argue he already has. Arnold will end up transferring and will thrive in his new home. To throw him under the bus over one loss to Tennessee is a joke. The Sooners will now start Michael Hawkins, who has no ability to throw the ball right now.
Good luck with all of this. Sooner fans deserve much better.
