Dwayne Haskins is saying all the right things before the 2020 season. As he enters the season as the likely starter for Washington, there are plenty of doubters. More so are emerging now that stories have come out that Alex Smith has been cleared to return. The fact remains that the job is Haskins’ to lose and he’s going about his business the right way.

The former Ohio State product says he wants to be like Tom Brady and Drew Brees from a work standpoint:

“I think mostly it’s just a mentality, going in every day and handling your business on and off the field,” Haskins said, via Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. “I just know you have to have a certain presence and confidence when commanding an offense or commanding a huddle. Having learned that going into the last couple games of the season last year, I’ve just been trying to master the same edge that a Tom Brady or a Drew Brees has when he steps into the building; you know that he’s there. … The offense needs a guy that’s going to take ownership and lead, and why not be me? So that’s what I’ve been doing.”

Brady and Brees are two good picks to model your work habits after. There’s a reason why both players are still going into their 40’s. Both Brady and Brees have been known as tireless workers. I hope Haskins means what he’s saying.

The biggest red flag last year was when he left the field early to take a selfie when there was still time on the clock and had to go out and take a knee. A rookie mistake no doubt but a mistake that can’t happen.

I’m still optimistic that Haskins can can put a good foot forward. Haskins has been put into a really unfair situation but I think he showed flashes to where he can become a capable starter. My comp for him coming out was a plus or minus version of Jameis Winston.
