Copa America 2024 Team Previews: Argentina

The 2024 Copa America begins on June 20th in the United States, with six CONCACAF teams set to compete in the tournament. Over the next couple of weeks, we will preview every team playing in the competition. Up next is the 2021 Copa America winner: Argentina!

The Argentinean National Team looks to continue their hot streak of international titles. Winning the 2021 Copa and the 2022 World Cup, they look to make it three straight major international titles (we exclude the Finalissima). Let’s see if the number one ranked country can repeat as the Copa America winners.

Copa America Appearances

The Argentinean National Team has competed in the Copa America a whopping 44 times and they have won a third of them. Only Uruguay has more appearances in the Copa America with a total of 46.

Best Finish in Copa America

Argentina is tied with Uruguay as the team with the most Copa America wins. Both countries have won the competition 15 times in their history. Argentina looks to break the tie by winning their 16th in this year’s Copa.

Key Players

Even though he is in a retirement league, Messi is still the player the opposition would fear the most. He is still as dangerous as ever and with a similar supporting cast from the 2022 World Cup win, it seems Messi could win his second Copa America.

The savior for Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, Emiliano Martinez, is returning for the 2024 edition of the Copa America. Martinez made a clutch save to help Argentina win the World Cup in the penalty shootout.

Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez are also returning to the Argentina National Team after both winning their respective leagues in Europe. Honestly, it is very much a similar roster to the World Cup team with only a couple of swaps.

Manager

The manager leading Argentina to the 2024 Copa America is Lionel Scaloni. In his time as manager of the Argentina National Team, Scaloni has helped the country win the 2021 Copa America and 2022 World Cup. Ever since he took over, the CONMEBOL nation has found success and he plays a part it in.

Biggest Game — None of Them?

Argentina is one of the favors to win the Copa America. They should be at the top of their group with ease and be able to proceed far into the competition. It is only a matter of who they face in the semi-finals or the final of the Copa America.

Prediction

The prediction: I believe that Argentina repeat as Copa America winners. Messi officially retires from international soccer and continues to make bank off of his MLS deal for another couple more seasons. I see Argentina beating Brazil in the final, in a 2-0 win for the 2022 World Cup winners.
