Is Justin Fields No Longer A Quarterback?

The newly acquired Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields could see himself playing a whole different position with his new team. According to Steelers running back Jaylen Warren, special teams coordinator Danny Smith could experiment with Fields as a kick returner next season.

“Our special teams coordinator was talking about Justin Fields being back there,” Jaylen Warren said on the most recent episode of the Not Just Football podcast. “We were like, ‘Hold up! Hold up!’ We looked at him like, ‘Justin Fields is about to be back there?’”

The Steelers acquire quarterback Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick with the hope of backing up newly-signed signal caller Russell Wilson.

Fields, 25, has the opportunity to learn behind a Super Bowl winning quarterback, but if the Steelers coaching staff sees him working out in another position, it could be the end of Fields being a QB.

Switching positions isn’t uncommon in the league, but it is rare for a quarterback to switch positions. Terrelle Pryor is a recent example of a QB switching their position, with Pryor switching to a receiver. In his best season as a WR with the Cleveland Browns in the 2016-17 season, racking up 1,007 reception yards and four touchdowns.

Julian Edelman is another example, as the New England Patriots legend was a quarterback back in college before switching. Justin Fields could look up to Edelman, as Edelman was a return man for the Patriots before getting playing time as a receiver with the Patriots.

This is a confusing case, as the Steelers traded the former No. 20 overall NFL draft pick Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles, leaving soon-to-be 36-year-old Russell Wilson with no apparent backup quarterback.
