Michael Penix Jr. Dynasty Fantasy Football Profile 2024

In one of the most shocking selections of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons selected Washington quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist, Michael Penix Jr.

Even though the Falcons opted to sign veteran signal-caller Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million in free agency, what does this selection mean for Penix’s fantasy football value in dynasty leagues? Let’s examine!

Even though you’re tailoring your strategy more year-to-year in dynasty leagues, factoring in Cousins’ arrival and role, Penix has little-to-no dynasty value right now. The Falcons have spent much of the last few drafts trying to supply their past quarterbacks with skill position threats, namely Kyle Pitts, Drake London and Bijan Robinson. It’s not that Penix won’t have anyone to throw to–he may not play for a while.

If you ask Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot, there’s the possibility that Penix could sit for the next four-to-five seasons.

Yes, general managers will (likely) never bash their newly drafted players publicly. Yes, that’s a hyperbolic timeline–even though nobody prompted him to say it anyway!–since Cousins is going to turn 36-years-old in August. No, that still does not suggest a positive outlook on Penix’s initial dynasty value.

In all fairness, Cousins is coming off a serious achilles injury and isn’t mobile, so the possibility or re-injury or possible regression in a new system with a new team isn’t low. But, assuming he’s healthy, he’s going to be the guy behind center until further notice. Penix, 23, also has an injury history. Every football player is injury-prone, but that places even more risk on riding with him in any fantasy format.

He certainly has more value than he would in a re-draft setting, but I still would not draft Penix in a dynasty format. If you do, be my guest! If you have enough room to stash, that’s fine; I fail to see draftable value for a player who may not be taking full-time snaps until he’s in year three, barring an unforeseen injury to Cousins during camp or the regular season.
